Gene, Upshaw, the executive director of the NFL Players Association died of pancreatic cancer. He was 63. Upshaw is credited with being a key player in the 1977, 1982 and 1993 collective bargaining agreements between the players association and the league, and was involved in the extentions of the agreement in 1998, 2002, and 2006. Upshaw is also remembered for his leadership during the 1987 strike, which led to the emergence of the household concept of ‘free agency,’ which allows players under certain conditions to sell their services to the highest bidder.
Upshaw is also a Hall of Fame guard, playing for the Oakland Raiders. Upshaw became the only player ever to start on championship teams in both the AFL and NFL (AFL–1967; NFL–Super Bowls XI and XV).
He is survived by his wife, Terri, and their three sons: Eugene, Justin, and Daniel. Truly a pioneer on and off the field.
